Introduction to Reiki

This is a short introduction course in opening your mind and heart to loving-kindness and connecting with Animals through Reiki.

What is Reiki?
The word, "Reiki" means, literally "Spiritual Energy". It refers to the energy that makes up all things in the universe--in other words, the energetic substance that quantum physicists talk about and study. Reiki "the system", on the other hand, refers to a Japanese system created by Mikao Usui in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The original purpose of the system was spiritual development, but in modern times the emphasis has evolved as a system of energetic healing, utilizing specific Japanese meditative practices and breathing techniques.

What does a Reiki Practitioner Do?
Reiki practitioners use intention, focus and meditation to build a sort of energetic "healing bridge". The bridge is built upon the foundation of the practitioner's dedication to his or her Reiki personal practice, energetic experience and purity of intention. The bridge itself consists of the energetic harmony and balance that is the essence of Reiki. When animals are stressed, sick, or injured, you could say that energetically, they are "imbalanced". By offering an energetic connection and bridge of "balance", the practitioner is offering the animal a support system that the animal can use to relax, self-heal, and "rebalance".

About the Instructor:
Casey Dowling is a Let Animals Lead® method Practitioner trained by Kathleen Prasad. Kathleen has created the Let Animals Lead® method not just as a bold new approach to Animal Reiki, but also as a model for advocating for holistic healing that is animal-led and supports living with compassion and loving-kindness in the world. The Shelter Animal Reiki Association [SARA] is a community of Let Animals Lead® Animal Reiki practitioner and teacher volunteers committed to supporting rescued animals and their caregivers with the healing benefits of meditation. The Let Animals Lead® method of Animal Reiki/meditation supports all aspects of healing. Our proprietary methods can help animals become more adoptable, and help their caretakers stay strong and calm in even the most difficult situations.

Casey has been an animal practitioner since 2019. She spends her extra time volunteering with Silicon Valley Pet Project in San Jose, California and is involved in a program called Dog Day Out. This program allows large dogs to be taken out of the San Jose Animal Care Center for a few hours to go on walks. SVPP is a San Jose-based organization. Inspired by the innovative spirit of Silicon Valley, their goal is to create a professional, sustainable animal welfare organization that celebrates rescue pets.
